Eurolla koko maailma -elokuvatapahtuma tuo maailman tarinoita Suomen syksyyn
Syksyn 2008 sarjaan kuuluu niin palkittuja uutuuksia kuin vanhoja klassikoitakin. Teatterin hämärään avautuvat monet maailmat Senegalista Saksaan ja Mekasta Meksikoon. Mitä tapahtuu, kun köyhä senegalilainen saa Euroopasta suuren rahalähetyksen tai kun leskeytynyt professori löytää New Yorkin kodistaan kaksi laitonta siirtolaista? Entä kuinka kohtaavat perinteet ja moderni länsimainen elämäntapa Ruotsissa – tai Algeriassa?
Elokuvia esitetään loka-marraskuussa 12 paikkakunnalla Suomessa. Liput elokuviin maksavat vain euron.
Eurolla koko maailma -elokuvakiertue on Euroopan kehityspäivien suomalainen rinnakkaistapahtuma. Euroopan komission isännöimä tapahtuma kokoaa vuosittain yhteen noin 3000 kehitysyhteistyön toimijaa. Tänä vuonna Euroopan kehityspäivät järjestetään Strasbourgissa 15.-17.11. Päivien teemana on paikallishallinto. Katso tarkemmin www.eudevdays.eu

Mahamat-Saleh Haroun: DARATT (Dry Season, TD/FR/BE/AT 2006) -K11- 96 min
Daratt sijoittuu 40 vuotta kestäneen sisällissodan jälkeiseen Tsadiin, jossa hallitus on juuri antanut armahduksen kaikille sotarikollisille. Isoisä antaa 16-vuotiaalle Atimille aseen ja tehtäväksi tappaa Atimin isän tappanut mies. Entinen sotarikollinen Nassara on nyt naimisissa oleva leipuri. Atim menee miehelle oppipojaksi päästäkseen lähemmäksi kohdettaan. Viikkojen kuluessa miesten välille kehittyy vahva side.
Daratt takes place in Chad, where the civil war that lasted for 40 years has now ended, and the government has pardoned all war criminals. Grandfather gives the 16-year-old Atim a gun and a mission to kill the man who killed Atim’s father. Former war criminal Nassara is now married and runs his own bakery. To get closer to his victim Atim becomes Nassara’s apprentice. While the weeks go by a strong bond develops between these two men.

Hans-Christian Schmid: LICHTER (Distant Lights, DE 2003) –K11-105 min
Lichter kertoo matkasta kohti onnea, turvaa ja parempaa elämää. Puolan kautta Saksaan pyrkivät ukrainalaiset laittomat maahanmuuttajat, ja heitä enemmän tai vähemmän auttavat paikalliset, haluavat kaikki löytää onnea elämäänsä. Usko ja luottamus toisiin ihmisiin joutuu kuitenkin usein koetukselle ihmisten miettiessä vain omaa onnellisuuttaan.
Lichter tells about a journey towards happiness, safety and a better life. The Ukrainian illegal immigrants attempting to get to Germany through Poland and the locals who more or less help them, all want to find a bit of luck in their life. Faith and trust in other people often become questionable when everyone only thinks of their own happiness.

Walter Doehner: TEO’S JOURNEY (El Viaje de Teo, MX 2008) –K13-100 min
Teo on asunut koko elämänsä Oaxacassa, Meksikossa. Hänen setänsä kasvatti hänet isänsä Wenceslaon istuessa vankilassa. Pian vankilasta päästyään Teon isä joutuu jälleen tekemisiin lain kanssa, joten hän päättää paeta Yhdysvaltoihin ja ottaa vastahakoisen poikansa mukaan. Matkalla Wenceslaon vihamies ryöstää heidät ja vie pojan isän mukanaan. Jälleen hylätty poika löytää uuden ystävän Chuysta, joka auttaa Teoa löytämään isänsä kaapanneet rosvot.
Teo has lived all of his life in Oaxaca, Mexico. His uncle raised him while his father Wenceslaon was in prison. Soon after getting out of prison Teo’s father gets involved with the law again, so he decides to flee to the United States and take his reluctant son with him. On their way they get robbed by Wenceslaon’s enemy, who takes Teo’s father with him. The yet again abandoned Teo finds a new friend in Chuy, who helps him to find the villains who captured his father.

Ousmane Sembene: MANDABI (The Money Order, SN 1968) –K11- 90 min
Vuosia työttömänä ollut Ibrahim Dieng saa eräänä päivänä shekin veljenpojaltaan. Saadakseen rahat käsiinsä joutuu lukutaidoton Ibrahim byrokraattiseen paperisotaan. Hän tuntee olevansa vieras omassa maassaan, heikko ja haavoittuvainen. Byrokratian lisäksi hän saa taistella rosvoja ja kateellisia kyläläisiä vastaan, ja lopulta pelastukselta tuntunut shekki osoittautuukin kiroukseksi.
One day Ibrahim Dieng, who has been unemployed for years, gets a money order from his nephew. To cash it the illiterate Ibrahim goes through a bureaucratic paper war. He feels like a stranger in his own homeland, weak and vulnerable. In addition to bureaucracy, Ibrahim gets challenged by robbers and envious villagers, and finally the money order that once seemed heaven-sent turns out to be a curse.

WE BUY, WHO PAYS? is a documentary about Western companies producing clothes and shoes in developing countries. It shows us the problems with the working conditions, like low wages, forced overtime, health issues, child labour and chemicals destroying land and groundwater. What can be done to solve these problems? We visit factories in India and talk to suppliers, labourers, NGOs, and farmers who give their point of view. Do western companies take any responsibility? Leaders for H&M and other big Swedish companies answer the question.
SANTA´S WORKSHOP takes you to the real world of China’s toy factories.
Low labour costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment.
Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organise trade unions risk imprisonment. The Swedish buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade?
THE DARK SIDE OF HEALTCARE reveals that simple surgical instruments, as well as patient wear, are produced for Swedish hospitals in unacceptable working conditions that even leads to environmental destruction.
The film shows that Swedish tax money is funding production that violates the human rights of workers in India and Pakistan.
Although private companies have been demanding suitable working conditions for the last ten years, Swedish county councils have not any such ethical demands. How is this possible?

Djibril Diop Mambéty: HYENES (SN 1992) –K13- 110 min
Friedrich Dürrenmattin näytelmään The Visit perustuva elokuva kuvaa ihmisen ahneutta ja materialismia. Colobanen kylä on taloudellisessa ahdingossa. Kylän entinen asukas, nykyisin miljonääri, Linguère Ramatou palaa Colobaneen hakemaan oikeutta ja kostoa. Vuosia sitten hän oli joutunut lähtemään kylästä tultuaan raskaaksi petolliselle rakastetulleen. Nyt hänellä on varaa lahjoa kyläläiset tappamaan tuo mies, joka saattoi hänet häpeään.
Based on the play The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmat, the film illustrates the greediness and materialism of people. The village of Colobane is in financial distress. A former villager, now a millionaire, Linguère Ramatou returns to Colobane in search for justice and revenge. Years ago she was forced to leave the village when she became pregnant for her deceitful lover. Now she can afford to bribe the villagers to kill the man who brought shame upon her.

Thomas McCarthy: THE VISITOR (USA 2007) –K13- 108 min
Elämäänsä kyllästynyt professori Walter Vale löytää New Yorkin kodistaan asuntohuijauksen kohteeksi joutuneen pariskunnan: syyrialaisen muusikon Tarekin ja hänen senegalilaisen tyttöystävänsä Zainabin. Pariskunta jää toistaiseksi asumaan Walterin luo, joka löytää heidän avullaan uuden innon elämäänsä. Kun Tarek joutuu telkien taakse laittomana maahanmuuttajana, tekee Walter kaikkensa pelastaakseen uuden ystävänsä.
A tired of life professor Walter Vale finds a young couple, a Syrian musician Tarek and his Senegalese girlfriend Zainab, living in his New York apartment. These victims of a real estate scam get to live, for the time being, at Walter’s, who with their help finds the lost passion in his life. When Tarek gets arrested for being an illegal immigrant, Walter does everything in his power to save his new friend.

Reza Bagher: WINGS OF GLASS (Vingar av glas, SE 2000) –K13- 105 min
18-vuotias Nazli syntyi Iranissa, mutta kasvoi Ruotsissa. Hän asuu yhdessä isänsä Abbasin ja isosiskonsa Mahinin kanssa. Koska Nazli haluaa sopeutua ruotsalaiseen yhteiskuntaan, kutsuu hän itseään Saraksi. Tästä Abbas ei pidä. Eräänä päivänä hän kertoo millaisen tulevaisuuden hän on tyttärilleen suunnitellut.
18-year-old Nazli was born in Iran but raised in Sweden. She lives with her father Abbas and her elder sister Mahin. Nazli wants to fit in to the Swedish society and therefore calls herself Sara, which is something Abbas doesn’t like. One day he tells what he has planned for his daughters’ future.

Ismael Ferroukhi: LE GRAND VOYAGE (FR/MA 2004) –K11- 108 min
Ranskalainen road movie. Réda valmistautuu ylioppilaskirjoituksiin, kun hänen isänsä velvoittaa hänet mukaansa Mekkaan. Matkalla eteläisestä Ranskasta Mekkaan isän ja pojan aiemmin viileät välit lämpenevät, ja he oppivat tuntemaan toisensa paremmin. Matkan aikana Réda oppii islamista ja tajuaa lopulta miksi matka oli tehtävä autolla. Elokuva palkittiin parhaana esikoiselokuvana Venetsian elokuvajuhlilla.
French road movie. Réda is getting ready for his finals when his father obliges Réda to travel to Mecca with him. On their way from Southern France to Mecca the once distant boy and his father get to know each other better. Réda gets to learn about Islam and finally understands why they had to travel by car. Winner of the best first film award at the Venice Film Festival.
